Coping Goals: Acceptance and Control
At a time of unprecedented uncertainty, it is crucial to focus on what is in your control and work to except everything else. Directing attention away from things beyond our control and toward the things that we can choose to do today will help to manage anxiety and find meaning in the present.
For example, we cannot control the following:
Other people’s decisions
Other people’s health
The news
The government’s actions
School opening or closing
The state of the health care system
Aging
Weather
In contrast, we can control:
Building resilience
Following advice from trusted sources
Focusing on what is important to me
Following a healthy routine for the day
Engaging in relaxing activities
Connecting with friends and family
Eating
Exercising
Supporting others
